Advisory Council

iotaCenter's Advisory Council was formed in 2008 to help Managing Director Stephanie Sapienza form a five-year strategic plan for iota. The subject matter covered in such a plan requires expertise in several different areas, including nonprofit management, fundraising, curatorial priorities, film preservation, library management and cataloging, and digital archiving. The plan is done, and now the council remains to help advise on enacting it.

Murtha Baca: Head of Getty Vocabulary Program and Digital Resource Management, Getty Research Institute. Advises on issues related to vocabularies, cataloging, description and metadata, which are essential to iota's plans to launch an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

Dennis Miller: Filmmaker and Professor of Music at Northeastern University in Boston, founder of the Visual Music Marathon, an exhibition partner of iotaCenter. Advises on issues of curatorship, programming and exhibition strategies.

Adam Hyman: Executive Director and Head Programmer of Los Angeles Filmforum, an organization dedicated to screening and advocacy for experimental film. Advises on issues of curatorship, programming and exhibition strategies, as well as preservation priorities.

Noel Palazzo: Co-founder of mad-actions and the Punto y Raya (Dot and Line) Festival, an exhibition partner of iotaCenter. Advises on issues of curatorship, programming and exhibition strategies.

Seth Kaufman: Collection Management software specialist at Whirl-i-Gig, responsible for creating and developing the collection management software CollectiveAccess, which iotaCenter is working on using as a basis for our forthcoming OPAC. Advises on issues related to database management, vocabularies and website upgrades.

Vibeke Sorensen: Filmmaker and Professor of Media Study at the University of Buffalo. Advises on issues of curatorship and mission assessment.

Janet Keller: Senior Communications Specialist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Advises on issues of development, public relations and outreach to bolster fundraising efforts.

Mark Toscano: Preservationist at the Academy Film Archive, also assigned to the stewardship of iotaCenter's film deposit there, and a known specialist on issues of the preservation of avant-garde and experimental film works. Advises on issues of curatorship, programming and exhibition strategies, and preservation/restoration.

Victoria Meng: Former iotaCenter associate and scholar on visual music (among other types of work), and Assistant Professor of Film at Arizona State University. Advises on issues of curatorship and mission assessment.

Rick Prelinger: Moving image archivist, librarian, founder of the Prelinger Archives and overall champion of open access. Advises on issues of mission assessment, as well as access issues such as scanning and digitization.
