3 Films by Micheline Durocher - Now available at iota's Library and Study Center!

Categories: [New Acquisition]

Electric Garden (2009)
"Electric Garden" follows one continuous pan of the edges and outlines of the female body and elicits the idea of the well-established erotic theme in art: the reclining nude. Rendered in rich and vibrant colors, it transfers the imagery of the undressed observed reclining woman to a visual representation of woman’s own satisfaction.

Doppelganger (2009)
This recent experimental video is inspired by the autobiography of Goethe, conveying the uncanny feeling of being confronted with your double.

Matchstick (2006)
Constructed around a soundtrack of burning matches, "Matchstick" is a poetic visual meditation on memory, desire, and Hans Christian Anderson’s "Little Matchstick Girl." The video finds visual pleasure in the play of light and darkness, blurring and fragmenting images while it develops its central themes: memory, the impossibility of truly “remembering” and the construction of desire through video editing techniques.

"The Nightgardener" (2008) by Jennifer Hardacker - Now available at iota's Library and Study Center!

Categories: [New Acquisition]

The life of a garden after dark: Balinese dancers sway on the petals of flowers, Russian singers perform in a lily. "The Nightgardener" brings together disparate images that capture the essence of our collective unconscious and plays these images on floral screens.

"The Nightgardener" explores the idea of the collective unconscious collected as images appropriated from old educational films, and are projected onto garden plants and then re-photographed.

3 Films by Hisham M. Bizri - Now available at iota's Library and Study Center!

Categories: [New Acquisition]

A Film (2010)
A film poem about love, the work embodies the blurred moments between dreaming and waking life. A journey through melancholy and joy, childhood and adulthood, the film stems from the notion that life is a circular journey.

Song for a Deaf Ear (2008)
A meditative exploration of the insanity of war, specifically in Lebanon, the artist's home country. In 2007, Bizri returned to Lebanon with his camera and created this film around the death of his neighbors 20 years prior. A collage of home videos, new footage, and fading images, the film undeniably affecting.

Asmahan (2005)
A film about famous Syrian singer, Asmahan, the filmmaker rearranges two of the actor's famous B-films to create a new narrative reflecting the star's life in colonial Egypt. Dream sequences and found footage explore the material quality of film itself, placing an emphasis on the effects of formal arrangement.

Capitol Symmetry by Neil Ira Needleman - Now available at iota's Library and Study Center!

Categories: [New Acquisition]

Best described by Needleman himself, the video "is totally about symmetry. First, the subject matter is symmetrical: the Capitol Plaza in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Second, I flipped the footage on itself, so the scenes in the frame are symmetrical: the left and right halves perfectly mirror each other. Third, the temporal structure of the video is symmetrical: rhythmic, slowly overlapping scenes progress to the midway point (the only calm moment in the video) and then they flow in reverse to the beginning (now the end). Fourth, in the second half of the video, a deeper level of symmetry is added when the top half of the frame and bottom half begin to mirror each other, in addition to the left right symmetry. This forms a pulsating kaleidoscopic effect that is either the apotheosis of symmetry or a satire of it. Or perhaps both."
