iotaSalon | January 2010

In November we held another successful salon at the UCLA Design | Media Arts Department, despite some serious commotion and protests on the campus. Click here to read more about the November salon and to see video of the Q&A with Chris Casady.

Our first salon for the 2010 year will be Thursday, January 7th, again at the Broad Art Center on campus, first floor at the EDA screening space.

Silence
Jules Engel

The Dreamlife of Letters
Brian Kim Stefans

Oli's Dream
Jaroslaw Kapuscinski

At the iotaSalon, we get together to screen and discuss new experimental works alongside some classics. The theme for this screening is Text and Speech. We will be examining works that explore the confluence of abstraction and language. What choices do artists make when using text in abstraction? How do speech and poetry compliment or complicate visuals?

Currently, the schedule includes

Screening on 16mm as part of the historic film segment:
Silence (1968) - Jules Engel
Dear Janice (1972) - Adam Beckett

Screening on video for the contemporary segment:

The Dreamlife of Letters (2006) - Brian Kim Stefans
Oli's Dream (2008) - Jaroslaw Kapuscinski (Text by Camille Norton)
Karatchi Scramble (2009) - Chris Casady
Floating Point (2009) - Audri Phillips
Civil War (2009) - Jean Detheux
This Might Be (2009) - Jani Sipilä
Night Fishing with Cormorants (2009) - Betsy Kopmar
