iotaSalons

The next iotaSalon will be held Summer 2010. Stay tuned for more details!

At our salons, we get together to screen and discuss new experimental film and video works. Artists are invited to submit their works for screening at the salon, and we follow the screening of the films with an informal discussion of techniques and artistic process. The salons are a very important activity for us because they represent the fulfillment of three (and sometimes all four) of our programs. The gathering of artistic minds enriches our Community; the informal screenings add to our Exhibition roster; the photos, video and transcripts create primary resources to bolster our Research program; and - when when we screen preserved works - we are showcasing our Preservation efforts.

Below we have listed information on upcoming salons, as well as compiled resources from salons past. When discussion occurs and artists speak about their process, we try to record as much of that interchange as we can. Using Overstream, we have begun transcribing the Q&As so that they can become primary resource documents. By doing this, those outside the LA area can benefit from the salons as well.

April 8, 2010 Salon | Visualizing the Body and Biology | UCLA

The theme for this iotaSalon is Visualizing the Body and Biology. We will be investigating the ways in which different experimental artists use biology as aesthetic themes in their work. How does the inherently concrete human form fit into abstract art? How is the body broken down, abstracted and reinterpreted to explore emotional or spiritual concepts? In what ways do biological concepts inform or interact with experimental visual media?

May 6, 2010 Salon | The City | UCLA

The theme for our next iotaSalon is THE CITY. We will be investigating the way urban environments are depicted in abstract and experimental works. How does construction influence image creation? How does the urban environment surrounding an artist inform or invade their work? How does the process of abstraction change our view of the city? How have architectural tools and thinking affected abstract and experimental moving images?
