The iotaSalon Returns!

After a long hiatus, The iotaSalon is returning to Los Angeles. With the generous support of the UCLA Design and Media Art Department, we will hold our salon on April 26th in their "EDA" screening space.

At the iotaSalon, we get together to screen and discuss works of Abstract Animation and Visual Music. Artists from around the world are invited to submit films and DVDs for screening at the salon. In addition, local artists can present live performance works.

The space at UCLA provides large, wall-size projection in a variety of video formats. With the recent addition of The iotaCenter's 16mm projector and sound-proof booth, film prints can now be screened as well. The upcoming salon will include works by Chris Casady, Kino, Mary Beth Reed, and Doo-Yul Park. Check the salon web page for schedule details and updates.

Call for Submissions

The iotaCenter accepts works submitted by artists working in the field of Abstract Animation and Visual Music. Materials donated to our non-circulating research collection will be available for viewing onsite by students, scholars, curators, and other visitors to our Study Center. Submissions may also be considered (at the artist's request) for public screenings, salons, and sales in our online store.

To submit a work, please follow the Submission Guidelines on our website.

Left: "Slither," by Jeffers Egan and Jake Mandell, now avaiable for sale in the iota store.

Study Center Now Open

iota's crew of interns have been hard at work cataloging our media collection. Now visitors to the Study Center can easily browse the collection or search the catalog for a specific title. Any of our videos (or video versions of films) can be viewed on-site in the comfort of our viewing station, (however, they can't be checked out or copied. Sorry).

The Study Center is located on the west side of LA in Culver City and is available by appointment.

So the next time you're in the LA area, spend an afternoon with us watching Abstract Animation and Visual Music --- from the earliest classics to today's latest releases. Just email us at info@iotacenter.org to schedule an appointment.

Adam Beckett Film Preservation

Some of you will remember the astonishing films of Adam Beckett from the 1970s. In the short time that he worked as an artist, Beckett left an amazing body of work and an indelible mark on the world of animation. In addition to his extraordinary personal films, Adam worked in Hollywood's special effects industry, heading the animation department for the first of the Star Wars films in 1977. Tragically, Adam died in a fire at the age of 29.

Now, in conjunction with the Beckett Family and The Academy Film Archive, iota is embarking on a project to preserve Beckett's six major films. You can be a part of this effort with our "Adopt-a-Film" program. Please read more about Adam on our website, and contribute to bringing Adam's films back to life.

Left: "Flesh Flows" is one of three of Adam's films that will be screened this summer at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC.
