Saving Jordan Belson

Our ongoing project to preserve and restore the work of legendary film artist Jordan Belson continues. In February, I picked up 38 cans of material from his North Beach apartment for deposit into The iotaCenter archive.

Most of the cans contained the original film and sound elements of his films produced between 1960 and 1990. A third of them, however, were preliminary versions.

Apparently, Belson would remake a film 7 or 8 times before releasing a final version. Perhaps in the future, there will be the means for us to make these versions available for study to scholars at our study center.

In the meantime, we will be focusing on restoring the original printing materials and making new release prints. Currently in the works are the titles, Allures(1961), World(1970), Momentum(1968), and Light(1973).

The Anthology Film Archive will be screening the new prints of World and Light in their upcoming travelling film series, Galaxy.

We plan to feature our Jordan Belson restorations in KINETICA 4 next year in 2002.

K3 in LA at USC

This year's KINETICA program is in the works and will premier in Los Angeles on August 17, 2001.

The screening is being sponsored by The Division of Animation and Digital Arts of the School of Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California. The screening will take place on campus in the Norris Theater beginning at 7pm.

It's SIGGRAPH week in LA.

August 17th is the Friday of the week the Siggraph Computer Graphics Conference will be held in Los Angeles. So if you will be going to Siggraph this year, be sure to plan to join us Friday night for the opening of KINETICA 3.

KINETICA 3 will feature the rarely seen films of Hy Hirsh and the Beat Generation filmmakers of the 50's in addition to more contemporary works.

As our plans become finalized, more information will be posted on The iotaCenter website: www.iotacenter.org

"Please and Thank you" from iota

We've added a new page to our website to say "Thank you" for all the donations we've received: equipment, cash, films and videotapes for the collection, books for the library, time and effort by volunteers, event hosting, etc.

We really appreciate the help. As a community organization we depend on the support of the community.

We're also saying "Please" to everyone else. We need your help to continue the work we are doing. Either as a volunteer or a donor of needed equipment, you can help support The iotaCenter.

Check out our list of needed items that we posted on the new page and see if you have anything that you're not using or that you're replacing with a newer model.

The iota community will thank you. http://www.iotacenter.org/gifts.html

NEWS FROM THE IOTACENTER DISCUSSION LIST

The iotaCenter maintains an ongoing discussion via email and the web.

In order to get to know each other better, a member of the group suggested we show each other our work in the form of a compilation videotape (especially since we're discussing a *visual* artform).

Fifteen artists contributed eighteen pieces and Aaron Ross graciously volunteered to put the whole thing together.

The result is two volumes (called "one iota" and "two iota") which have been made available at cost to the members of the discussion group.

The list of titles and the artist's comments about their own works were collected by Fred Collopy and posted on his site here: http://rhythmiclight.com/OneIotaTwoIota/index.html

An archive of all the messages posted to the iotaCenter's discussion group is available here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iotacenter/messages To join the group, please send a blank email to: iotacenter-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
