There are two programs in this third edition in the KINETICA series:

Program 1:
Hy Hirsh and the Fifties:
Jazz and Abstraction in Beat Era Film
Newly-preserved prints of the rarely seen films of Hy Hirsh are featured in this look at abstraction in the '50s. The program also includes films by Hirsh's contemporaries including Jordan Belson, Harry Smith, Patricia Marx and also John and James Whitney and Mary Ellen Bute. Abstract Expressionism, Jazz, Zen and Beat culture --- all come together in these abstract films of the '50s.

Program 2:
Jordan Belson's "Bardo" and the Contemporary Program
In the contemporary program of KINETICA 3, more recent 'visual music' animation will be screened --- both computer-animated and otherwise, on film and on video, from the 70s up to the present. This program features the world premiere of "Bardo," a new work by Jordan Belson, and also includes work by Sky David, Joost Rekveld, Richard Reeves, Ying Tan, Paul Glabicki, Bob Snyder, and Chris Casady as well as other contemporary artists.

Artists' Salon to Begin in LA on October 10, 2001

The iota Artists’ Salon is a monthly gathering of artists working in the art of light and movement. These events are organized by the iotaCenter to give artists an opportunity to meet their peers and to present and discuss recent works and works-in-progress. The Salon’s purpose is to foster inspiration and communication among those of us who create films, videos, projections, and other similar works. As these events take place in the Los Angeles area, it’s a great opportunity for long-time practitioners and inspired newcomers alike to share their works and ideas.

New Videotapes Available from The iotaCenter Store

iotaCenter online store

"Rhythms" by Len Lye (available now)
Features newly restored prints and a 28 page booklet. Contains twelve titles from A Colour Box (1935) to Particles in Space (1980) including Free Radicals, Color Cry, Trade Tattoo, and the rarely seen Rhythm (1957).

"The Korean Trilogy" by Robert Darroll (available Oct 5)
From 1984 until 1990 I produced three abstract animation films based on three very different compositional concepts. All of these films were hand drawn and shot as multiexposures. Formally they are rooted in the tradition founded by Ruttman and Fischinger and are closely related to compositional forms associated with contemporary music. These three films form "THE KOREAN TRILOGY", a project which I commenced after nearly two years residence in Korea.
