Oil Wipe

The oil wipe screen is a relatively obscure animation tool. It uses a backlit transparent tray filled with colored oils that don't mix. If the artist runs a finger through the oil mixture, it creates a space for other colors to fill in. The flowing oils are photographed frame by frame. This technique can produce very strange and fluid effects, but it can also be difficult to control.
